Evening Masterwork: Tchaikovksy’s Serenade for Strings

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893)

Serenade for Strings by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovksy

Evening Masterwork for July 17, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Tchaikovsky was pretty busy during the autumn of 1880. He was working on two pieces back-to-back, and to the composer, they were total opposites. One was an overture that he said he wrote “without any warm feelings of love and so, it will probably be of no artistic merit.” That would be his famous 1812 Overture. The other was a beautiful, Mozart-inspired serenade, and this one he seemed to like a little better… “I wrote from inner compulsion. This is a piece from the heart, and so, I venture to hope that this work is not without artistic qualities.”
