Evening Masterwork: Arriaga’s Symphony in D
Symphony in D by Juan Crisostomo Arriaga
Evening Masterwork for October 11, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9
Juan Arriaga died when he was only 19 years old, but he still had quite the compositional output in his short life. At the age of 18, he composed his Symphony in D, a work that is actually fairly mature and one that he composed while serving as an assistant professor at the Paris Conservatory. It’s also a work that tipped the composer into more early-Romantic styles, featuring a long, Beethoven-like introduction at the very beginning of the work.
