Evening Masterwork: Brahms’ First String Sextet

Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897)

String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Op. 18 by Johannes Brahms

Evening Masterwork for May 1, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Brahms composed his first String Sextet during the summer, while he was vacationing on the banks of the Elbe River. The composer was in his 20s, yet this work is distinctly Brahms, and it even ignores several important early influences, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. The String Sextet No. 1 features characteristics of music that came before it, like the Classical order, and also certain Baroque conventions. It’s our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7: the String Sextet No. 1 in B-flat by Johannes Brahms, on Classical WSMR.
