Evening Masterwork: Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto

Frederic Chopin (1810 – 1849)

Piano Concerto No. 2 in f Op. 21 by Frederic Chopin

Evening Masterwork for February 17, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

As we often hear about music from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Frederic Chopin was actually composed prior to what we now know as the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1. In fact, the Piano Concerto No. 2 had already been premiered by the time Chopin started on his “First” Concerto. Why is this so? Well, Chopin, after hearing his initial effort at a piano concerto, likely wanted to move beyond what he had been doing. And these days the f-minor concerto is less popular than his e-minor concerto. So the numbering of the concertos was likely a decision by the publisher, highlighting perhaps what Chopin saw as the better piece as Number 1 – but of course, they are both phenomenal pieces, highlighting Chopin’s piano-writing brilliance. The Piano Concerto No. 1 by Frederic Chopin, our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
