Evening Masterwork: Dvorak’s Third Symphony
Symphony No. 3 in E-flat, Op. 10 by Antonin Dvorak
Evening Masterwork for April 8, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9
The Symphony No. 3 in E-flat by Dvorak comes at a time when the composer was falling out of the influence of Richard Wagner and more into his own unique voice, but there are still some hints of Wagnerian spirit throughout the work. This Symphony is the work that drew the attention of international listeners for the first time, and it is also the first of Dvorak’s symphonies to receive a public performance, happening in 1874 under the baton of Bedrich Smetana. There are some unusual features to this work: for one, it is only three movements. And, in addition to hints of Wagner, there are also hints of Berlioz in the final two movements. It’s our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
