Evening Masterwork: Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto No. 3

Mauro Giuliani, 1781-1829

Guitar Concerto No. 3 in F by Mauro Giuliani

Evening Masterwork for June 26, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Mauro Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto in F Major is the third and final concerto the composer wrote. Mauro Giuliani was a guitarist himself, and in the 19th-century he was widely considered a virtuoso of the instrument. In his lifetime, the use of the guitar in mainstream classical music was a relatively novel development, but, Giuliani’s caught a number of great musicians’ attention: Beethoven, Weber, and probably even Paganini and Rossini. In fact, it’s believed that Giuliani participated in the premiere of Beethoven’s seventh symphony, presumably playing the other instrument that he was great at: the cello. Hear the Guitar Concerto No. 3 by Mauro Giuliani tonight at 7: our Evening Masterwork on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9.
