Evening Masterwork: Giuliani’s Guitar Concerto

Guitar Concerto in A Op. 30 by Mauro Giuliani

Evening Masterwork for February 4, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

By the time the 19th Century rolled around, most people were not interested in the guitar, which is a bit surprising if you consider that in the Renaissance and Baroque eras the guitar (and lute, its early relative) was immensely popular. It was thanks to guitarist and composer Mauro Giuliani that the guitar made a resurgence, and he basically did it all by himself. He was a true advocate for the instrument: a performer, a teacher, and a composer who focused most of his efforts on the guitar. But he also composed what may be the first true guitar concerto, which he premiered in Vienna in April of 1808 – and, of course, audiences loved it. We’ll hear it tonight at 7: our Evening Masterwork on Classical WSMR.
