Evening Masterwork: Glazunov’s “Pastoral” Symphony

Untitled (Pastoral Scene) by David Johnson, 1867

Symphony No. 7 in F “Pastoral”  by Alexander Glazunov

Evening Masterwork for September 24, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Alexander Glazunov’s Symphony No. 7 is titled the “Pastoral” symphony… and it is in the key of F major. That might sound familiar to you, because Beethoven Sixth Symphony is also the “Pastoral” symphony, and, like Glazunov’s Seventh, is in the key of F major. Indeed, Glazunov’s Symphony is evocative of the images of Beethoven’s, but it is also distinctly the music of Glazunov. The Seventh Symphony, like the composer’s earlier symphonies, combines Western forms with Russian content, but what sets it apart is Glazunov’s increasing interest in counterpoint.
