Harold in Italy by Hector Berlioz

Evening Masterwork for September 13, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

In the early 1830s, French composer Hector Berlioz won the Prix de Rome, a prize instituted by the French government, which allowed him to spend more than a year in Italy, studying in an environment of classical art treasures. It was here that Berlioz picked up the inspiration for Harold in Italy, but it was Paganini who asked the composer to write the work, requesting a work in which he could display his powers on a fine Stradivarius viola.
