Evening Masterwork: Haydn’s “London” Symphony
Symphony No. 104 in D “London” by Franz Joseph Haydn
Evening Masterwork for January 17, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9
Haydn’s 104th Symphony was first performed in London on an all-Haydn concert, conducted by the composer, in May of 1795. At this time in his life, he was working in London and not only was he quite popular, but he was also making quite a comfortable wage: in a diary entry from the time, he wrote “One can make as much as this only in England.” Later that same year, Haydn returned to mainland Europe to work for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, and his fame in England followed him. The 12 symphonies he composed for London were soon enough being performed in Austria and all over Europe. It’s our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7: Franz Joseph Haydn’s “London” Symphony, on Classical WSMR.
