Evening Masterwork: Mendelssohn’s 1923 String Quartet in E-flat

String Quartet in E-flat by Felix Mendelssohn

Evening Masterwork for July 9, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 3 in E-flat, which he composed in 1823, was originally left without a number. It could be assumed that Mendelssohn did not mean for this quartet to be published (which is why he gave no number to it); however, it would be published 56 years later, in 1879. It’s a work that is not too technical for the performers, and generally follows conventions of the day. Notably, the quartet’s final movement employs a fugue, which is a reflection of Mendelssohn’s own study of counterpoint and his love of Bach.
