Evening Masterwork: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 19

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

Piano Concerto No. 19 in F K. 459 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Evening Masterwork for November 25, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

For Mozart, the piano concerto was an opportunity to combine his two talents: In composing for the genre, he could be both Mozart the composer, and Mozart the pianist. It was also a way of making a living, and his livelihood in Vienna depended on the production of his piano concertos like never before. During the period that Mozart composed his 19th piano concerto, he was the most admired pianist in Vienna. In fact, the year the work premiered, 1784, Mozart was so in-demand that during that concert season, he wrote six piano concertos, including the 19th. That level of output is a testament not just to Mozart’s genius, but also the efforts he undertook to stay in the public consciousness.
