Evening Masterwork: Mozart’s Serenade No. 11

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

Serenade No. 11 in E-flat, K. 375 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Evening Masterwork for March 20, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

The Serenade No. 11 in E-flat by Mozart was originally composed as a Harmoniemusik – a type of ensemble consisting of wind instruments that was popular in Vienna during that time. It was in April of 1782 that the Austrian Emperor founded his own Harmoniemusik, and Mozart took special note, especially since he had considerable experience composing for wind instruments. His Serenade No. 11 would be born out of this experience, a work that he originally scored for six instruments, and later revised to include eight: two clarinets, two oboes, two horns, and two bassoons. Tune in tonight at 7 for our Evening Masterwork: the Serenade No. 11 by Mozart.
