Evening Masterwork: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade

Scheherazade and the sultan by the Iranian painter Sani ol molk (1849-1856)

Scheherazade Op. 35 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Evening Masterwork for October 29, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

This Evening’s Masterwork is the story of The Thousand and One Nights, the collection of Middle Eastern and Indian tales, turned into music. Rimsky-Korsakov completed Scheherazade in 1888, a work that evokes the image of the young Scheherazade telling stories to her sultan husband to keep him from going through with his plan to kill her. Rimsky-Korsakov described his Scheherazade as “an orchestral suite… representing a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images.”
