Evening Masterwork: Schubert’s “Great” Symphony in C
Symphony No. 9 in C “The Great” by Franz Schubert
Evening Masterwork for March 17, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9
Franz Schubert’s ninth symphony was completed in 1828, the year of the composer’s death. The symphony is sometimes considered Schubert’s greatest work, and sadly the composer did not get to hear it performed in his lifetime; the Viennese musicians originally set to premiere the work considered it unplayable, and it wasn’t premiered until 1839. The symphony is also a testament to Schubert’s admiration for Beethoven, often seen as a tribute to the great composer, and its stature and thematic grandeur was what likely earned the symphony its nickname of “The Great.” Hear it tonight at 7, our Evening Masterwork, on Classical WSMR.
