Evening Masterwork: the Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello by Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827)

Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Cello in B-flat, Op. 11 by Ludwig van Beethoven

Evening Masterwork for March 18, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Early on in his career, Beethoven was actually quite a bit of a non-conformist. He actively took on projects that avoided the genres that were popular with his predecessors: this is why many of Beethoven’s chamber works with wind instruments date from this period, and most of his symphonies, concertos, and string quartets came later. However, it’s also believed Beethoven may have viewed these early works less seriously, seeing them more as studies on how to use wind instruments in his later big works. Either way, his early Trio for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano is an example of one of these early wind works, and it’s our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9.
