Evening Masterwork: Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847)

Symphony No. 3 in a Op. 56 “Scottish” by Felix Mendelssohn

Evening Masterwork for February 7, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Felix Mendelssohn first got the idea for his third symphony while on a trip to Scotland. He was 20 years old at the time, and he wasn’t in any hurry to finish the symphony – he took 13 years to complete the work. Additionally, despite its listing as his third symphony, it was actually the last symphony he finished. And in a lot of ways the symphony is more of a souvenir of that trip to Scotland, as there is nothing particularly Scottish about the music. It’s our Evening Masterwork tonight at 7 on Classical WSMR.
