Virtual Events

Many organizations continue to operate and provide activities, tours, and other experiences during these unprecedented times. WUSF Public Media has put together a list of organizations, both locally and nationally, who continue to provide experiences from the comfort of our homes.

Local Virtual Community Events

Museums:

The James Museum from Home – Explore The James Museum collection online through art, movies, books, music, family activities and more. Each week the curated content is freshly considered and presented as a new way to experience the museum from home. Visit The James Museum from Home at jamesmuseum.org. 

The Dalí Museum – The Dalí Museum offers free virtual tours that allow you to engage with the artwork of the renowned Salvador Dalí through its app and online exhibits. There are several self-guided tours on The Dalí Museum App along with many different exhibitions and collections, including Midnight in Paris, 1929, and Dreams of Dalí.

Florida Holocaust Museum – The Florida Holocaust Museum is providing virtual tours and events to help continue its public engagement of this significant historical event. These virtual events include Testimony Tuesday, Artifact Wednesday, and Lesson Thursday.

The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum – The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum continues to hold a number of special events virtually. These will include Coffee in Common: A Discussion of Race and Politics, The 1619 Brunch, and more! These events can be found on the museum’s website.

Tampa Museum of Art – The Tampa Museum of Art invites you to tune in to their weekly and daily series to learn new insights from artists, curators, and educators about the artwork at the museum. More information can be found on their website.

Lake Wales History Museum – While the Lake Wales History Museum is closed to the public, you can explore the museum and virtual learning from anywhere with online videos, historical online exhibits, virtual tours, and our historic walking tour. Arts:

St. Petersburg Opera Company – The St. Petersburg Opera Company has a number of performances that are sure to entertain. The St. Petersburg Opera Company has free opera performance streams on its YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/c/StPetersburgOperaCompany. In May, the organization will begin posting its opera’s on Monday’s with a pre-show chat with Maestro Mark Sforzini on Facebook at www.facebook.com/stpeteopera. Also, the organization will hold its annual gala BELLA VOCE virtually this year. Information on the gala can be found here: www.stpeteopera.org/gala.

Creative Pinellas – Creative Pinellas has created a portal for virtual tours and performances on their Arts In page. This connects the community through local artists in Pinellas County. This consists of news, music, film, visual arts, and so much more! More information can be found at creativepinellas.org/artsin.

The Sarasota Orchestra – The Sarasota Orchestra has teamed up with Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9 for a Tuesday Masterwork broadcast each week at 7pm. These broadcasts include works from Beethoven, Bruch, Mozart, and more! The broadcasts can be found on WSMR’s broadcast page.

The Florida Orchestra – The Florida Orchestra has also teamed up with Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9 for a Thursday Masterwork broadcast each week at 7pm. These broadcasts include works from Vivian Fung, Tchaikovsky, Handel, and more! The broadcasts can be found on WSMR’s broadcast page. The Tampa Theatre – The Tampa Theatre is offering virtual cinematic experiences with a collection of new, first-run movies being released via streaming platforms by their film distribution partners. Purchase your virtual ticket on their website.

The Straz Center – The Straz Center invites you to join them on their virtual stage for a number of virtual experiences. Check The Straz Center’s website for more information.

Attractions:

The Florida Aquarium – Join The Florida Aquarium for daily Facebook Live content through its SEA-SPAN broadcasts. This allows audiences to watch the lovely sea creatures the aquarium has to offer while temporarily closed. The aquarium has also introduced the Virtual Discoveries in STEM, a resource filled with learning opportunities for you at home! This new resource is designed to provide parents and school kids with an abundance of educational resources in this time of closure, social distancing, and homeschooling.

Busch Gardens – Join Busch Gardens of Tampa Bay to view some of the amusement park’s favorite exhibits, rides, and animals. Busch Gardens posts multiple times a week on their Facebook page. You can watch your favorite animals being fed or take a virtual ride on one of the parks many rollercoasters!

Florida Virtual Community Events

Museums:

The Nova Southeastern Art Museum – The Nova Southeastern Art Museum in downtown Fort Lauderdale offers virtual tours to explore the museum’s contemporary art collection. The current exhibits include “Happy!,” “I Paint My Reality,” “Transitions and Transformations,” and many more!

Biltmore Hotel – The Biltmore Hotel in Miami is offering virtual tours of this historic hotel. The tours include images of the hotel’s floor plan and images from the hotels Main Lobby ballrooms,  the Palme D’Or Restaurant, and the Fontana Courtyard, to name a few.

National Naval Aviation Museum – The National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola allows virtual visitors to view the museum’s extensive collection of aircraft’s. This is the world’s largest naval aviation museum and has 150 restored aircraft’s from the Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy.

Arts:

Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra – The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra offers weekly broadcasts consisting of classical works from renowned composers. You can catch these live performances every Friday at 8pm on the orchestra’s Facebook page.

Frost Art Museum – The Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University offers virtual tours of their recent exhibits, including Connectivity, Transitional Nature, Terence Price II.

National Virtual Community Events

Museums:

American Museum of Natural History – The American Museum of Natural History in New York City offers virtual tours of the museum’s exhibition halls. Travel back in time to historical periods by examining artifacts and studying replicas. The museum also offers guided hall tours on its Facebook page.

Smithsonian National Museum – The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. offers a number of virtual tours that guide the viewer through history. You can view past, current, and permanent exhibits on their website.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art – You can visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City from the comfort of your couch. Explore the museum’s vast collection of art or take a tour that shows the timeline of history.

Wildlife:

The National Park Service – The National Park Service allows you to visit national parks from the comfort of your own home. You can explore the sites and sounds of the nation’s wildlife by visiting their website or social media pages.

The San Diego Zoo – The San Diego Zoo is offering an online guided tour of the zoo’s wildlife called Inside Look Tours. The tour also provides information on how the staff takes care of the animals.

The Georgia Aquarium – Visit The Georgia Aquarium’s website to watch live video feeds of sharks, fish, and even otters!

Arts:

Museum of Modern Art – The Museum of Modern Art in New York City is holding virtual views of exhibitions every Thursday through video stories and curator Q&A’s. You can find a list of MoMa’s virtual events on their website.

BB&T Center – The BB&T Center has started a new series called Concerts #FROMYOURCOUCH. This series provides us with concerts from world-famous artists, like P!NK and John Legend, from the comfort of your home. These range from past performances and recently recorded ones from the artist’s homes.

The Art Institute of Chicago – The Art Institute of Chicago is offering virtual tours of the institute’s renowned art collection. Explore art collections filled with impressionism and even fashion.
