Evening Masterwork: Gliere’s Harp Concerto

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956)

Harp Concerto, Op. 74 by Reinhold Gliere

Evening Masterwork for May 22, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Reinhold Gliere was only two years younger than Rachmaninoff, and in a lot of ways, his music shows it. Gliere’s music is firmly rooted in the Russian cosmopolitan style – but one major difference from Rachmaninoff is that Gliere never left the Russian Empire (or, later on, the Soviet Union). In reality, Gliere’s avoidance of any sort of “modern” sound left him very much in demand in Soviet Russia. His 1938 Harp Concerto features idiomatic writing for the instrument: arpeggiated figures, rich chords, and simple melodies. It’s our Evening Masterwork tonight: Reinhold Gliere’s Harp Concerto, tonight at 7, on Classical WSMR.
