Evening Masterwork: Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1

Franz Joseph Haydn performing in a string quartet (Collection: StaatsMuseum, Vienna)

Cello Concerto No. 1 in C by Franz Joseph Haydn

Evening Masterwork for September 20, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

While working for the Esterhazy family in the 1760s, Franz Joseph Haydn had to make sure his musicians were happy to stick around and play all those symphonies. One way he tried to ensure their presence was by writing them concertos, which is how the Cello Concerto No. 1 came about. The work was a gift to cellist Joseph Weigl, but went missing for nearly 200 years.
