Evening Masterwork: Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

Clarinet Quintet in A by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Evening Masterwork for September 6, 2019 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

No one is sure why Mozart was tasked to compose his Clarinet Quintet in A, though it was first premiered at the end of 1789 at a benefit concert for musicians’ widows and orphans. Interestingly, enough, the movements of the quintet was also premiered in separately amongst other works – common for the time, but totally unorthodox today. Clarinetist Anton Stadler was a featured performer for this performance, and, of course, all of Mozart’s great clarinet works were composed with Stadler in mind.
