Evening Masterwork: Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791)

Piano Concerto No. 12 in A by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Evening Masterwork for January 9, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

In a letter penned to his father in December of 1782, Mozart described the character of his Piano Concertos 11 through 13 as “a happy medium between what is too easy and too difficult; […] brilliant to the ear, and natural, without being vapid.” The Piano Concerto No. 12, in particular, is full of themes that were complex and complete enough that Mozart didn’t need to play with developing those themes as the piece went on. It’s also a lightly orchestrated concerto, as Mozart intended the performance to be alongside a string quartet.
