Evening Masterwork: Schumann’s “Spring” Symphony

Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856)

Symphony No. 1 in B-flat, Op. 38 “Spring” by Robert Schumann

Evening Masterwork for April 20, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

A lot of the time when you hear of a work of music having a nickname, for example, Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, that nickname was given by the publisher, not the composer. But in the case of Schumann’s First Symphony, the “Spring” Symphony, it was the composer who gave it that nickname. And of course, it was the season the composer had in mind when he composed the work, such as the brass fanfare that announces “The Beginning of Spring.” Spring scenes in Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, our evening masterwork tonight at 7 o’clock.
