Evening Masterwork: The Organ Symphony by Saint-Saens

Camille Saint-Saens (1835 – 1921)

Symphony No. 3 in c, Op. 78 “Organ” by Camille Saint-Saens

Evening Masterwork for March 5, 2020 – 7:00 PM on Classical WSMR 89.1 and 103.9

Although Camille Saint-Saens is often considered a conservative composer for his time, his Third Symphony is all but conservative. It’s highly original and innovative in many ways, such as how the composer handles the form and thematic development, and of course, the instrumentation. Saint-Saens himself was an organist, so it is fitting that he would write a symphony using the instrument. Although the Organ Symphony is by no stretch a virtuosic piece for the organist, it is a remarkable example of orchestrating for keyboard instruments within the symphonic context. It is our Evening Masterwork, tonight at 7, on Classical WSMR.
