The Florida Orchestra: Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

Guest Conductor Tito Muñoz

This week’s Thursday Masterwork with The Florida Orchestra features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 from a performance given in 2018 and Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” from a 2013 performance led by Tito Muñoz.

The Conductor

Tito Muñoz is one of the world’s leading conductors in classical music. Muñoz made his professional conducting debut in 2006 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and has performed with the world’s leading orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra.[1] In addition, he is the current Music Director of the Phoenix Symphony. Tito Muñoz is a versatile conductor who brings clarity and excitement to every performance.

The Works

Stravinsky described “The Rite of Spring” as a musically choreographed work that highlights springs’ immense power of creativity. The score was completed in March of 1913 and received its premiere in Paris two months later. “The Rite of Spring” stunned audiences for its dark themes but helped to usher in what is now modern music.[2]

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is one of the composer’s most recognized works. The symphony’s famous four-note opening quickly presents the piece’s victorious and triumphant theme. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony continues to exhilarate audiences world-wide and has become the standard of expectations when composing classical compositions.[3]
