There’s a lot going on in the Tampa Bay region and Sarasota in the next week or two.
The Morean Center for Clay is hosting an exhibition by Artist Karina Yanes.
She said her creations reflect who she is.
And earlier, it was a source of pressure to "perfectly depict what she always felt inside."
“Which was this, like, blended culture that is sort of invisible, like, you wouldn't walk into my parents' house and look around and be like, Oh, this is a, you know, Puerto Rican, Palestinian, Ohioan house,” she said.
Yanes’ “Between Two Groves" is now on at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg.
She said the title comes from her family’s connection to orange groves.
"...Referencing the orange grove that my father’s family lived on in Palestine and my current experience living in Florida. My Grandpi also worked in a juice factory in Puerto Rico, so oranges are weaved throughout our family’s history. As we talked about, I’ve always felt left living in between all of those worlds,” she said.
And coming up, the Sarasota Orchestra will perform "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Dukas, the weekend of Dec. 6. Principal Bassoonist Fernando Traba will be featured in that work. “It has a big four-bassoon solo, which is the part showcased in Fantasia. They will also be doing the big ‘Concierto de Aranjuez,’” he said.
That composition will feature guitarist Pablo Sáinz-Villegas.
And Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero will also conduct Respighi’s “Pines of Rome,” and John Williams’ suite from “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
