WSMR explores history and the events in music, culture, the arts and more that shaped our world.

On this day, Feb. 10, 2006, in his home country of Italy, famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti gave his final public performance at the opening ceremony of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

He was in fine voice that day, and he looked sharp, in a tux and tails with a black cloak on and wearing a shiny white bow tie. He stood under a massive golden chandelier. And his ever-present white handkerchief was there in his left hand.

You can watch that performance below.

The crowd roared after the final note of his signature song, the aria “Nessun Dorma” from Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Turandot.”
