On this day, Oct. 29, 1753, Jean-Phillipe Rameau’s heroic pastoral, “Daphnis et Egle” was performed only once for King Louis the XV at Fontainebleau.
The work was never performed elsewhere, in the city or at court, and it was never published.
It was only 11 years ago, in 2014, on the 250th anniversary of Jean-Phillippe Rameau’s death, that the opera was revived in a modern stage performance by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants.
