On this day, March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was completed after more than five years of painstaking and dangerous work.
It was created for the 1889 World’s Fair and was supposed to be torn down after 20 years.
Gustave Eiffel scrambled to save his creation and pulled it off. He realized that it could be used as a radio transmission tower, so the lease was extended.
And if you’ve ever been to the Eiffel Tower, you can understand why so many artists and musicians have been inspired by it.

That includes American Composer Joseph Bertolozzi, who created music out of the tower itself in 2013 by recording the sounds generated by striking the famed structure with mallets or other assorted objects.
