Conductor Anu Tali

WSMR explores history and the events in music, culture, the arts and more that shape our world.

On this day, June 18, 1972, conductor Anu Tali was born in Talinn, Estonia.

She studied piano from childhood and graduated from the Talinn Conservatory in 1991. She then studied conducting at the Estonian Music Academy and later at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

While she was still in her 20s, Tali co-founded the Nordic Symphony Orchestra with her identical twin sister, Kadri.

Tali became the music director of the Sarasota Orchestra in 2013 and served in that capacity through the 2018-19 season.

I grew up in a radio household. My dad was a radio newsman, and he used to take me and my siblings to work at his station in Coral Gables. Hearing his voice on the radio was a comfort to me.
