On this day, March 2, 1824, in Bohemia, Czech composer, conductor, teacher and music critic Bedrich Smetana was born.
He has often been called the “father of Czech music.”
According to Grove Music online, his eight operas, including “The Bartered Bride,” and his cycle of symphonic poems from “Ma Vlast,” form the foundation of the Czech Classical music canon.
Some say there would be no Antonin Dvorak without the influence of Smetana.
